It has been six years when I returned to Tokyo, Japan. By now my dream of becoming famous worldwide had come true. After three years in Shangai, I was offered a contract in America where I have became more famous. In the last year I’ve been on tours around the world. Yet ironically I never came back to Japan in any of those tours.

Now that I’ve fulfilled my dream, I had felt emptiness. It was all because of that one girl I’ve been constantly thinking about, the one I could never forget even if I went a month without listening to the recorded songs.

Mieko Kihara was still the love of my life, even after six years.

I came back in hopes to see her again. To my dismay, I couldn't find her the first day back, nor the days, weeks and months later. It has been three months now that I’ve returned and she was nowhere in my reach.

I had hired a P.I in hopes to find her but that was a dead end. But I did receive information about her after she left High School. In the reports it had said that after she finished she had wanted to become a singer in hopes to find me. It then shocked me when I read on. Her first audition she had passed - and when she thought she would be starting a career in music, her parents died in a car accident.

Due to her grieving, she had a heart failure and was in hospital for over a year until she was able to leave. Once she was discharged, she disappeared off the grid. No one was able to find her, even the music company who wanted her to come back.

It was three months after that I finally saw her, just when I had nearly given up any hopes of finding her. I was able to recognise her instantly, even from a far distance as she walked into the Music Record Company where I was slumped down on a sofa fretting over the music I just composed with my manager.

She had changed. Her long wavy hair wasn't long and wavy anymore. Instead, it was cut to her shoulders and straight, tied up in a high pony. But her features had matured. Her body matured with more curves complimenting her slender figure. She was more beautiful from six years ago.

I tuned out my manager’s voice. I could only hear my own heart beat. It was beating fast again at the mere sight of her. She was wearing a blue sweatshirt and black slacks. She was holding a box in her hand. I recognised the uniform as the Italian place people would order from.

“...roki... Hiroki!”

I tore my eyes away from her to look at my manager. “Ryou, sorry. I’ll be right back.”

I stood up and searched for her where she had been just seconds ago only to find her missing from the spot. My breath hitched. Don't tell me I’ll lose her again. I jogged through the mass of my colleagues and finally spotted her again. She was leaving now. She must have delivered the food.

“Mieko!” I called out through the think crowd. She didn't hear me. I had to push and shove my way now until I got to the exit just in time for her to come out as well. “Mieko,” I called her name, a little breathlessly.

She was shocked to see me. She then shocked me by clouding her emotions and looking at me darkly. “Yes?”

I gulped. Not only did her looks change, her personality changed as well. The feeble girl wasn't standing in front of me. Instead a grown up, emotionless woman stood in front of me. I didn't know what to do, what to say.

“Mieko,” I called her name again.

She let out a frustrated breath of air. “Can I help you?”

“I looked for you just like I promised,” I told her. “I couldn't find you.”

A flicker of surprise appeared in her eyes, just as fast as it came, it disappeared just as fast. “So? I don't remember such promise.”

“I still remember the other promise.”

“And what’s that?” she remarked, her mouth quirked upwards. “I don't remember that one as well.”

I could see her taunting me. I knew she remembered. “Maybe. I’ll let you remember that on your own. When you’re ready to fulfil that promise, let me know because I’ve been waiting for these six years.”

I drew a deep breath and let it go harshly. I was angry. I just didn't understand her cold attitude towards me. Before I could ask her, I realised I was catching a lot of attention. Everyone was staring in both confusion and curiosity.

I couldn't blame them. This was the first time I had pursued a woman to talk to her. In the last six years I have only thought of my career and never went out with a girl. There had been scandals of me with other models, actresses and singers. None of them were true, not when I couldn't forget her. At least the media was splashing over the magazines as rumours were going around that I was gay.

“Mieko,” I was obsessed with calling her name, I know. I had missed calling it so much. “Now that I have found you, how can I get in touch with you? I want to talk to you.”

“I have nothing to say to you, Mr. Li,” she threw back at me. “I’m late with my deliveries. Goodbye.”

I watched her leave in utter disbelief. Was I the only one who never forgot? Was I a fool?

~*~**~***~**~*~

I couldn't get her out of my mind and my manager noticed my lack of focus, mainly because I usually was active in meetings, always giving my opinions. Even though I knew he was dying to know who Mieko was, he couldn't ask because I never given him the opportunity.

“Hiroki,” he sighed after the meeting ended and everyone left but the two of us. “You’ve been distracted for two days! What’s gotten into you?”

I stared at him blankly. “Nothing.”

“Don’t say ‘nothing’,” he pleaded in worry. “I’ve been your manager for six years. This is the first time you are out of focus. Who was that woman the other day?”

I gulped. I finally had given him a reason to ask. “Nobody.”

“Really?” he wasn't convinced. “I know you. You wouldn't run after a woman if she was a ‘nobody’. So tell me the truth. Who is she?”

I sighed. Although this man, Ryouhei Fujiwara, was my manager, he was my friend as well. Maybe that was a mistake. Now I have to tell him everything private or non-private. I sighed again. “She was a girl I knew back in High School. I was a senior and it was my last week until graduation...”

By the time I finished telling him how we spent our time and then now how I had been searching for six months until meeting her by pure coincidence two days ago, the room was silence.

“Wow!” he exclaimed. He let out a breath of relief. “I really thought you were gay all this time!”

I gasped. “I knew it! A friend you are!”

He laughed dryly. “Sorry. But to think you’ve been waiting all this time to return to her! I just can’t imagine you being the romantic type.”

I glared at him. “Our friendship is cut now,” I said. “From now on you’re just my manager.”

Ryou jumped on me and wrapped his arms around my arm. He looked at me with a puppy look. “I’m sorry!” he cried out. “Don't cut off our friendship!”

“Fine, just get off me,” I roared. As a manager, Ryou was perfect but as a friend he was immature.

He let go of me and grinned, standing in front of me. “I’d really die if I go back to just being your manager. It was boring in the first six months when I first started off as your manager. You were also cold to me.”

“I just didn't tell you everything,” I grunted as he brought the past up. It had been the first six months of hell, having to cope with missing her.

“You still don't tell me anything,” he whined. “You never told me the most important thing, your first love until now!”

I leaned forward and buried my face on my hands. “I don't know what to do now,” I said. “Was I stupid to wait for her? Was I stupid to think she’d wait for me? I just hate myself for taking this long to come back.”

I heard Ryou bend forward. He placed a hand on my shoulder and squeezed it. “You’re not stupid. You’re in love.” He paused. “Are you still in love with her?”

I sat back on the chair, my hands falling on my lap and looked up at him. “My heart was beating faster than before. I know I still harbour feelings for her. What shall I do, Ryou?”

Ryou bit his bottom lips, a sign of him deep in thoughts. He stayed in that position for the next few minutes. His eyes lit up. “Just be you!” he said. “You pursued your career like there was no tomorrow with confidence and determination. You did not back down. You did not give up. Just use all that emotion into getting close to her.”

I was surprised by his words. He was right. I wasn't the type to give up. I needed to get close to her and find out what happened to her. I already guessed it had mostly to do with her parents dying so suddenly. But why was she being cold towards me? Did it affect her so much to forget me?

I jumped to my feet and hugged him “Ryou, you’re the best manager/friend one could ask for!”

At that precise moment some of the staffs decided to enter the room. They blushed to see us in that position. For once I didn't care what anyone thought.

I pulled back but didn't let him go. Instead, I steered him towards the door. “Are you hungry?” I asked, not waiting for him to response I went on. “Let’s order Italian.”

Ryou chuckled. “You’re getting overly excited already. You must really love this girl.”

~*~**~***~**~*~

She handed Ryou’s order first. She then came to me and handed mines. She never spoke. She wouldn't speak.

“Mieko,” I was calling her before she could turn to leave. “Sit down for a few minutes and talk to me.”

“I’m busy.”

“Don't worry about your work,” I assured her. “I paid triple amount and told your boss to allow you half an hour break.”

I didn't flinch when she sent a murderous glare at me. “Why did you do that for?”

“Mieko, I told you. I need to talk to you.”

“Why?” she nearly choked out. Tears welled up at the corner of her eyes. “Why can’t you just leave me alone?”

I froze. I didn't know what to say. I wanted to hug her but I had to hold myself back. If I hug her now, whatever reason she was still talking to me, even if it was little, would be completely gone.

“Mieko, right?” I heard Ryou say from beside me. “I heard you went to the same school as Hiroki. It’s really funny how you guys were able to meet again.”

“Y-yeah,” Mieko replied, slightly taken aback.

“Sorry, about Hiroki,” he went on. “He’s just a little happy meeting an old friend. You see, he doesn't have many friends. He’s a total loner despite being a celebrity. Please don't push him away. He doesn't get to talk to anyone.”

“Oh.”

It was a small white lie but I knew Ryou was trying to help me. It seemed like it was working because Mieko’s face slightly softened. She relaxed and sat down on the chair opposite us. My eyes met with her, she quickly averted her gaze to her lap. She was fiddling with a lock of her hair.

A smile crept on the corner of my mouth. Some things haven’t changed.

“I became famous worldwide just like I said,” I started a random subject.

“I know.”

“By the way, did you manage to listen to my songs?” I asked. “Or did you forget me as soon as I left?”

Her eyes shot up and she stared at me with plea. “I did listen!” she assured me. “I have been keeping up to date with all your songs!”

She clamped her mouth shut and looked away again, blushing furiously.

It took me a while to let her words sink in. So, she hadn't forgotten about me? Could this mean I still had a chance?

“I mean...” she whispered. “Just like you said, you’re famous. Your music is broadcasted everywhere. It’d be hard not to hear it.”

Ah, even if there was chance for me, I still have to break through the protective shield she was putting around her.

“Of course,” I agreed with her. “Tell me, Mieko, why did you cut your hair short?”

She unconsciously touched the edge of her hair. “I couldn't keep it neat. Working three jobs deprives you of taking care of yourself.”

“You got three jobs?”

She nodded. “Yeah, I’m a waitress in a cafe in the morning, deliver for the Italian restaurant in the afternoon and work as a bartender at night.”

“Are you in need for money?” I enquired in concern.

It seemed like I have reached my limit for the day to talk to her because she was standing and up backing away to the door.

“Sorry, I need to go back now,” she said. “You guys should eat before the food gets cold.”

~*~**~***~**~*~

The following day, Ryou and I decided to stop by a cafe for a hot drink before we went into the Record Company where they would be meeting the producer to talk about another album. Ryou became my moral support after the freeze incident yesterday. I didn't want the same thing to happen again.

I had to hide myself by wearing a scarf around my neck which also covered half of my face. I had to take off my sun glasses when I entered the cafe but I pushed down my cap to cover the rest of my face from on lookers.

“Can I take your order?” the waitress came holding a notepad. She finally raised her head to look at me then gasped. “Hiroki!” Her eyes travelled to my manager. “And...?”

“Ryou,” he finished for her. “I’m sorry we didn't introduce ourselves yesterday properly. I’m Ryouhei Fujiwara, Hiroki’s manager. Nice to have met you.”

“Erm... Mieko Kihara. Nice to meet you too.” She then stopped short. I laughed inwardly. Although, she was trying her hardest to come out as an emotionless person, she kept letting herself slip, especially around Ryou.

Ryou was the nicest guy around that everyone around him can’t help but be nice back at him. He had a baby-face that made him approachable. People tend to let their guard down around him.

“What are you guys doing here?” she hissed.

I shrugged. “To get a cup of coffee. What else do people come here to do?”

She stared at me in frustration then wrote down my order. Ryou quickly gave his order, turning out long as he was very particular about his food and beverage. She left to bring us our drinks.

Ryou stared at me once she was gone. “Man, you need to keep yourself in check.”

I tore my gaze off her and stared back at him in confusion. “What do you mean?”

“You’re lusting over her. You have to stop before you scare her away. Plus, you’ll lose your reputation if anyone saw you like this.”

I looked at him cynically now. “I’m sorry, but at the moment I could care less about my reputation. If I have to act like a monkey just to get her to like me, then I wouldn't hesitate to do it.”

“Please don't,” my friend said. “As I manager I won’t allow it and as I friend I still won’t allow it. I told you I’ll help you. Just don't jeopardise your career that you have worked so hard to make.”

I stayed silence. I couldn't tell him that I regret it all. I wished I stayed back then with her. But I knew she would have hated me for giving up my dream for her.

“Here are your drinks,” her angelic voice broke through my thoughts. I looked up to see her placing a cup in front of me.

“Thanks.”

Ryou excused himself a few minutes later when a phone call came. I was left alone at the table. The cafe was quiet and only a few people were around. As I looked around like a lonely puppy, I knew she was staring at me. It seemed my trick worked. She felt sorry for me and was heading towards the table.

“Where did Ryou-san go?” she asked.

“He’s on the phone about work,” I replied. I motioned her to sit down. At first she hesitated but then obliged. “Tell me why you’re working three jobs, Mieko.”

She bit her bottom lip. At first I thought she wouldn't say it but when she opened her mouth to speak surprising me.

“When I finished school I finally realised what I wanted to be,” she explained quietly. Her gaze was focused on the edge of the table as she spoke. “I wanted to be a singer. I passed the audition and was about to go to my first job when I was given the news on my way that my family was in an accident.”

I gasped. Although I knew the information already, it still was shocking for me. I wasn't going to let her know I knew. I rather hear it properly from her mouth.

“Hearing the news made my heart weak,” she went on, “but I went to the hospital to see them only to find out that they had died instantly. Seeing their dead bodies finally made my heart stop beating. Because I was at the hospital they were able to be treated quickly but my heart became so fragile that the doctors were afraid that if I go back out to the world I’d have a serious heart attack.

“Because I’ve stayed over a year at the hospital, the medical fees became too expensive for me to pay altogether. My doctor who looked after me the year I was there, allowed me to pay slowly. Ever since then I’ve been working as many jobs as I can just to pay off the fees as well as keep some money to pay rent, food and personal things.”

It was heart breaking to hear how weak she had been and how she had to work hard. I wished I had been there for her, given her some of my strength. I wished I could heal her heart that was still hurt from that day. But I only watched as she quietly stood up, refusing to meet my eyes and walk away just when Ryou returned.

“What happened?” he asked.

I shook my head and glanced at her once again as was trying to be busy behind the counter. I shook my head again and stood up to left the cafe, leaving the confused manager who was then quick to follow.

~*~**~***~**~*~

The next couple of weeks which turned to months I have been purposely meeting her places as if it was pure coincidence. I knew her schedule beforehand with the help of Ryou who had the knack of finding out information secretively. My tight schedule would be coinciding with hers. And every time I was getting closer and closer to her.

One day we were talking about her parents again. It was because my parents were mentioned and the conversation was lead to hers. Unlike last time, I did not stay quiet. To my surprise my hands grabbed her arms and pulled her into a tight hug.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered into her ear. “I wanted to come back but I wanted to keep my promise to become famous before I returned.”

She pushed me away and took a step back. A warm smile appeared in the corner of her mouth. She didn't look as hurt as last time. “I know,” she said. “If you came back without fulfilling your promise, I wouldn't have seen you.”

I returned her smile. “I pretty much guessed that.”

Ryou came and interrupted our chat. He seemed a little restless and flustered. I eyed him curiously.

“What’s up, Ryou?” I questioned when he refused to say a word.

“V.I.P wants you to do a tour with them,” he responded hoarsely.

I gasped. V.I.P was a group of American band who had recently climbed up to fame just like me. To do a tour with them would only boost my fame as well as theirs. It was a little hard to grasp the information.

“When is the tour and how long for?” I quickly asked wanting to know more. At the corner of my eyes I could see Mieko fidgeting on the sofa trying to figure out what we were talking about. I couldn't help but grin inwardly at how cute she looked.

“End of this month we are to leave for the US. The tour is for half a year. And then there will be a TV show with the band and you.”

It really was hard to grasp. This is what I wanted but they had refused the idea when I had brought it up a month before I came to Japan. To think they had changed their mind now. My train of thoughts stopped when I heard a gasp beside me. I turned to find Mieko’s eyes widened and mouth slightly hanging low.

“Mieko?”

“Y-you’ll be leaving soon?” she stammered, her voice croaky as if she was about to cry.

I then realised the disadvantage of going to the US. I would have to leave Mieko behind once again. The thought sent chills down my spine. How could I leave her again? I haven’t even confessed my love for her.

“I-I...” no words would form out of my mouth. I really couldn't say anything.

She stood up suddenly and bolted out the room leaving me even more speechless. I stood routed at my place unable to run after her. Sweat beaded on the side of my face.

“You okay?” Ryou’s voice snapped me out of my trance.

I turned to face him again then at the door that she had disappeared from and then back at him. I let out a heavy sigh.

“What shall I do, Ryou?” I pleaded desperately. “I want to take this opportunity but I don't want to lose her. If I leave again, I’ll never be able to come back to her.”

“Trust me on this,” my manager said. “Take this offer. Something good definitely will come.”

I frowned, my worries subsided momentarily.

~*~**~***~**~*~

I took my manager slash best friend’s advice. I had no choice in the matter but to trust him after all he hasn’t disappointed me yet. But I was still disappointed. Mieko had been ignoring me for the last two weeks. I’ll be leaving soon and she refuses to talk to me.

If only she asks me to stay. I would listen in a heartbeat. I wouldn't care about Ryouhei my best friend, my manager. I would stay if she says so. Only, she wasn't asking.

Something suddenly happened that took me by total surprise. I had no idea it was coming but I got the feeling Ryou did because he held a smirk on his face. Was this all his plan from the beginning? This guy was not to be underestimated with his skills, I noted.

I was sent a note through Ryou from Mieko that I read out loud for my friend to hear.

“Tomorrow, come to the studio at 11am. I have something I have to say.”

“Isn't tomorrow the last day of auditioning at the studio?” my friend wondered out loud.

He was right. There had been five days auditioning that was showing in TV. People around Japan were travelling to Tokyo just for the audition. I had been asked to be a judge but I refused the offer since I really didn't want to sit and hear tone-deaf people who would definitely turn up.

So, when tomorrow came, I was ecstatic with the thought of her wanting to meet me. I had to lock Ryou in the hotel room as I didn't want him following me.

Exactly at eleven o’clock I entered the studio. There were TVs on everywhere I went showing the Talent Show. But I stopped on my track when I saw Mieko in the TV. She stood in front of three judges and held a microphone as she stood on the stage. She was twiddling with her short hair and I could guess that she was nervous.

I stood there staring. I was frozen on root, unable to move or tear my gaze off the screen.

Just what is she planning?

“Could you tell us your name and a little about yourself?” one of the judges said.

She cast a smile towards the judges and into the camera. “My name is Mieko Kihara. I previously wanted to become a singer but a lot of things happened stopping me from fulfilling my dream. Now a certain someone came back into my life and brought my dream back out. This certain someone will be leaving me again and I don't want him to go without knowing how I feel. He once said that my voice made him nearly fall for me. I promised that I would make him definitely fall for me when he returns. I want to sing him a song as a confession.”

The judges were speechless. So was I.

Without the judges giving her a signal to sing, she opened her mouth and the angelic voice that I missed so much was emitting from her mouth. If the judges had been speechless before they were beyond speechless now. Their mouth hung open and their eyes were widened.

Ah, that silly girl, I thought with a grin forming in the corner of my mouth. She really made me fall for her all over again.

~*~**~***~**~*~

I was waiting for her when she came out of the room where she had sung in front of the three judges and the nation. She was twirling a lock of her hair again. When she saw me, her eyes expanded momentarily until it softened. She stepped in front of me, glad the place was deserted.

“Did you hear me?” she asked gingerly.

I frowned. “Hear you what?” I teased.

She pouted. “Did you hear me sing?”

I broke into a wide grin. “Yes.”

She waited patiently, staring at me. I stared back. She let out an exasperating breath. “Well...” she paused to take a deep breath. Her eyes fell on the floor as she shifted from one foot to another. “D-did I make you fall for me?”

“All over again,” I said breathlessly.

She frowned. “All over again? But I thought I made you nearly fall for me before?”

“Silly,” I pinched her nose causing her to yelp and swat my hand away. I stepped back and folded my arms over my chest. “I had lied. Six years ago I fell in love with you just hearing your voice the first time,” I paused when she gasped. “I didn't want to tell you then because I thought it would be unfair to confess and then leave.”

She let out a dry laugh. “Oh my God,” she gasped again. “I liked you then as well but when I returned home the last day I saw you, I heard your voice and also fell in love but it was too late. You had already left. I wanted to see you again that I planned to become a singer. Things didn't go as planned...”

“I know,” I said when her voice trailed off. “Let’s leave the past alone for now and talk about the present. Mieko Kihara, I love you. Please tell me not to leave. I won’t ever leave you again, if you say it.”

“I told you to trust me.”

I gasped and turned to face Ryou, who was sending me mocking glares. I gulped. “It’s not like that,” I protested. I was just afraid.

He shook his head disappointedly then turned to Mieko. “I’m glad you took my advice.”

“Advice?” I echoed in confusion as I looked from my friend to my love then back to my friend.

Mieko spoke for him. “Ryou-san came to see me the day after he said about the tour with V.I.P. He told me that you’re still waiting for me to fulfil our promise and then told me about the audition. I didn't want to lose you again so I wanted to confess to you before you left. I was afraid when you returned you wouldn't look for me anymore.”

A smile crept in the corner of my mouth as just like her, I have been afraid as well. My smile then fell when all her words sunk in. My eyes shot at Ryou with a questioning look. He had not told me about his talk with her. For two weeks I have been worried and he had known all that time without telling me anything.

He held out his hands in defence to my glaring. “I would have told you but I didn't want to ruin Mieko-chan’s surprise.”

My expression softened as I recalled her surprise. I let out an exasperating breath. “So, what happens now? Do we leave for a year?”

“Yes,” he replied. “I’m just surprised,” he went on, “that you don't know what the prize for the winners of the audition is.” I stared at him with my brows furrowed. “The winner for the audition is given instant fame. The winner is to fly to America and join the tour with you and V.I.P.”

My jaws dropped. Mieko gasped. I knew she had no idea as well until now.

Could this be a chance for us to stay together? But it was too good to be true. What if she didn't get through? I mentally smacked myself. This is Mieko Kihara. Her voice was so beautiful that there was no way she would be rejected. At the thought my heart began pounding fast, my breathing hitched and I was getting excited.

I grinned widely at her. She was alarmed by my sudden grin.

“What is...?”

Her voice was cut off when I leaned forward and kissed her. Her eyes widened but I kept my lips on her forcing her to open up. This is what I have been dreaming to do ever since I saw her again. In fact, it was what I have wanted to do six years ago. I ignored Ryou who cleared his throat.

It was several minutes later we pulled back to gasp for air. I noticed that my friend had left us alone to give us privacy. I stared at her as I took in deep breaths and released it.

“I love you so much, Mieko. I’m never letting you go, ever. Wherever I go, I’m going to take you with me. And wherever you go, I’m going to follow you.”

“Me too,” she breathlessly responded. “I love you too, Hiroki. I don't want you to let me go.”

The emptiness I had been feeling had been filled by her love. She obviously was the winner for the Talent Show and had flown to the U.S with me. I was ecstatic to know that she was with me. We fulfilled our promises. We were together, and I was damned it would be forever.

~The End~
